Why Group Therapy is so Effective

1. You feel like you are not alone. Hearing other people talk about what works for them not only gives you practical knowledge, but you can see someone else struggling with similar issues as yours.

2. Group members will be exposed to a variety of opinions and approaches to problem-solving and coping. Having a diverse group will give you the opportunity to hear perspectives you and your therapist alone may not have contemplated. Other group members often share tips, techniques, and pieces of wisdom that can be life-changing.

3. When we are part of a group we see it as a part of our identity. I am a “group member.” This helps us have a more stable sense of self. You are a part of something bigger than yourself. By contributing to the group you will feel a greater sense of being a caring person, which can raise self-esteem.

4. Helping others boosts our mood. When we share our experience or knowledge and in return hear it was helpful, we often have positive thoughts and emotions, such as pride, gratitude, connection, and belonging. Likewise, having others understand us and accept us as we are helps us accumulate positive experiences in the group, leading to positive experiences outside the group.

5. We can practice scary social skills in a safe place. If you have a hard time with confrontation, saying “no,” or communicating in any way, you have the perfect place to practice. The good group therapist will create an inviting and supportive atmosphere.

6. Groups decrease loneliness. Being with other is ingrained in us. Our ancestors traveled and lived in groups. Now, we are so separated by our modern society that we often do not get the kinds of social interactions we need. By getting and giving emotional support in a group context, you will feel safer and more connected to society and yourself.

7. You will learn valuable skills. Many groups led by professionals also include a skill-building component. Living Skillfully, Mosaic Mental Healthcare’s DBT and CBT skills group that meets Mondays at 4pm CST, combines 30 minutes of getting and giving support with one hour of learning skills that will help you decrease overwhelming emotions and anxiety while increasing positive experiences and improved relationships. If you’ve been thinking about group therapy today, consider signing up! Living Skillfully is currently open to Missouri residents and costs $30/1.5 hour session.
